It appears that Prince William and Prince Harry were cut from Star Wars: The Last Jedi because they were too tall. While the film won’t earn nearly as much money as its predecessor The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi is still a monster hit for Disney and Lucasfilm, earning more than $1.325 billion worldwide to date, with nearly $617 million of that tally coming from domestic ticket sales. Both its global and stateside sales were enough to push The Last Jedi into the top 10 highest grossing films of all time, with a No. 9 ranking on the global chart and No. 6 on the domestic list.
The distinct rankings are no doubt a feather in the caps of all those involved, from writer-director Rian Johnson to his impressive ensemble cast, including Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. Even background artists can boast that they were in one of the highest-grossing films of all time, whether they were one of the decked-out players on the gambling planet of Canto Bight or one of the stormtroopers commanded by Captain Phasma of the First Order.
Sadly, Princes William and Harry will not be able to ever point out their contribution to the film, because the cameo appearances by the British royals hit the cutting room floor. Both concealed as stormtroopers, it appears there was a distinct reason their cameo scene had to go. According to The Telegraph, William, who is 6’2″ and Harry, who is 6’1″, exceeded height requirements to be stormtrooper. A source tells the publication, “Stormtroopers have to be exactly 5 ft 11 in. At the time we shot it I think the feeling was that the scene would make the final movie. The scene just didn’t work for the final cut so it was left out.”
Even though stormtroopers are no longer clones, it appears that the First Order wants to keep things uniform anyway, and in this case, the distinctive height difference between William & Harry and the other stormtroopers would have been too noticeable. In case you are wondering, the princes appeared in a scene alongside Benicio Del Toro’s codebreaker, DJ.
Although William and Harry didn’t make the final cut, they can’t feel too bad. After all, how many people have the chance to visit the set of a Star Wars film, much less have a cameo in it? On top of that, they got to don some stormtrooper armor for a while, and probably much to their relief, blend in with everybody else and not attract so much attention for a change – that is, until somebody inevitably asked, “Aren’t you a little tall for a stormtrooper?”
