Simon Pegg Says Abrams Had Different Idea for Rey’s Parents

Star Wars actor Simon Pegg confirms that J.J. Abrams originally had different plans for the reveal of Rey’s parents. While Abrams received some backlash for the sentimentalism he displayed in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it was nothing compared to what awaited Rian Johnson when he went in the opposite direction. Though The Last Jedi pulls from much of Star Wars‘ history – both the films and Expanded Universe – Johnson’s mission to move beyond the past didn’t sit well with some die-hards. But with Abrams returning for Episode 9, there’s a chance that some of the previous film’s progress could be undone.

Before Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrived, the nature of Abrams’ mystery box mentality led fans to spend two years speculating on the backstory of Snoke and the potential lineage of Rey. When the film arrived, however, Snoke was done away with before anything consequential was revealed and Rey’s parents were said to be no one of great significance. Even composer John Williams thinks there’s more to Rey’s parents than The Last Jedi let on, and now Pegg has confirmed that there originally was.

Pegg appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he revealed some interesting information concerning the identity of Rey’s parents, as Abrams had originally planned:

“Well I know what J.J. kind of intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi]. I don’t know. I don’t know (laughs). I think Unkar Plutt is Rey’s real father.

Unkar Plutt and Rey in Star Wars The Force Awakens Star Wars: Simon Pegg Says Abrams Had Different Idea for Reys Parents

Not only has Pegg appeared in both The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but he has a long history of working with Abrams thanks to Star Trek and Mission: Impossible III. As such, it seems safe to assume Abrams clued Pegg into his plans for Rey’s parentage. After all, the question of who the new Force user was related to has been a big deal since The Force Awakens was released. Not to mention, as Pegg played Unkar Plutt, the slaver who Rey’s parents gave her to, it’s likely Abrams told the actor a bit more about the character’s history. As Pegg put it:

“There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her. But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

Though things could have been very different in The Last Jedi, not everyone is eager to see Rey revealed as a Skywalker or Kenobi. The Force exists in all living things, and Rey’s power was a testament to the idea that anyone could become skilled in the ways of the Force even if they didn’t have one of a handful of special names. Though Johnson’s film may have its flaws, his impetus to change the direction of the Star Wars universe may have been the right one for the franchise’s survival. Audiences will get to see how he does when he’s untethered from an established series soon, as Johnson aims to capture the Star Wars spirit in his upcoming trilogy.

In the meantime, fans will get to see what it’s like for Abrams to return to Star Wars and finish what he started. Nothing that’s been done so far can’t be altered in some way, as Kylo could have simply been lying about Rey’s parents. Still, the options for who she could be related to are limited. The Reylo relationship would seem to rule out her being a Skywalker, if nothing else so that the incestuous undercurrent from the Original Trilogy isn’t repeated. That means the only real option is she’s a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi, which would hardly be a shocking reveal. But with two years before the final entry in the new Star Wars trilogy arrives, we will have to wait awhile to find out for certain.
