Though Legends of Tomorrow boasts having mainstays such as White Canary, the Atom and Heatwave, the revolving door on the Waverider can’t be ignored. In fact, the coming and going of various DC heroes has been a double-edged sword of sorts, because while viewers have gotten attached to certain characters they’ve eventually had to say goodbye to, it’s undeniable that new blood keeps the show fresh and exciting.
So, if you’ve been keeping up with news regarding the ensemble series, then you knew to expect at least one exit in last night’s season 3 finale, “The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly.” But technically, we were witness to three, although one was left somewhat open-ended.
Before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s talk about who won’t be sticking around. This may be a time traveling show, and anybody can be brought back in some capacity (just ask Captain Cold), but last night really seemed like conclusive ends to the arcs of both Rip Hunter and Damien Darhk.
When it comes to Hunter, we shouldn’t be all that surprised because actor Arthur Darvill had been on in an increasingly diminished capacity, so let’s just say my mouth wasn’t agape when he made the ultimate sacrifice by distracting Mallus while the Legends made a temporary escape. Plus, Jes Macallan’s Ava Sharpe seems poised to fill his role on the series, especially since she’s been promoted to the principal cast for season 4.
Similarly, Damien Darhk of all people met a heroic end by traveling back to the minutes preceding Mallus’ consumption of his daughter, Nora. Effectively taking her place, Damien served as the demon’s vessel knowing that he’d be ripped asunder moments later. Needless to say, this was a happening that I didn’t see coming.
As for Vixen, Amaya Jiwe’s exit was the most expected, though she didn’t die. Rather, she simply went back to 1942 Zambesi to let history naturally run its course. Sure, it’s highly possible that Maisie Richardson-Sellers could come back for a guest shot here and there, but this is something the show had been building toward for a while.
Still, the producers left us a teaser for Legends of Tomorrow season 4 in the closing moments, that being an appearance made by John Constantine. As it turns out, he broke the news that the rest of the gang opened a door allowing various other monsters through. Sounding somewhat Lovercraftian in nature, this should allow the series to go in astounding new directions when we rejoin it in the fall, so color us intrigued.
